Reclaiming Motherhood from a Culture Gone Mad
It is an admittedly bold title. Maybe even a little too bold? I wondered to friends and family. I was a little apprehensive about owning the new title my publisher had proposed for the book that’s coming out this fall. After all, it’s me defending this bold claim that our culture has gone mad.
My apprehension faded this week as Apple released beta features including its new pregnant man emoji, bringing my “bold claim” down to something rather self-evident. As men break “women’s” records and women are reduced to their genitalia in medical articles identifying them as “bodies with vaginas,” I am left wondering whether this book will be published fast enough, or if the insanity will develop well beyond its content in the coming months, leaving it obsolete before these pages see the light of day.
In all seriousness, I am so grateful to be stewarding this book into the world, to have been immersed in the intellectual tradition of the Church so steeped in wisdom, and to be able to respond to these gaps in reason and sanity our culture is spouting with the beauty and hope of Christ’s purpose for our lives. If anything, instances like these only serve to intensify our culture’s cry for meaning and purpose.
As Christians, we have access to the living water that everyone is thirsting for. Our real challenge is getting beyond party lines and echo chambers to communicate the way to well effectively. How do we do that? Well, for starters, I might recommend that you stay on the lookout for pre-order information for Reclaiming Motherhood from a Culture Gone Mad (not just for mothers!).
In the meantime, let’s pray for charity, and that our eyes be opened to the small moments we might be witnesses to those who believe differently than we do. As Dorothy Day reminds us, we only love God as much as the person we love the least.
